There are obviously a fair few movies set to be released in 2019 but, “X-Men: Dark Phoenix,” might just take the title of the most anticipated of them all… Now the bad news is that the film’s release date recently got pushed back for a second time but the good news is that the cast and crew took to New York Comic Con over the weekend to reveal all about the newest X-Men chapter.
Stars of the sequel Sophie Turner and Tye Sheridan both attended the event alongside writer Simon Kinberg, and the handful of interviews they did there were full to the brim with exciting details which should just about hold us over until the movie is released next year… Emphasis on the just about.
As well as revealing the first thirteen minutes of the movie to some incredibly lucky NYCC attendees the stars sat down with IMDB to tease what we can expect from the June release.
“When I was younger my brothers were obsessed with the Dark Phoenix comic,” Sophie Turner who will portray the role of the Phoenix herself, Jean Grey, said. “And I vaguely remember reading them when I was younger, and I really liked the storyline… But when I got the role of Jean, I wasn’t sure if that was the direction they were going to take her in because it had kind of been done in the third X-Men movie but now it’s like finally we get to really kind of delve into her and it’s awesome.”
Another thing that Sophie found “awesome” was the movie’s writer and director Simon Kinberg, who joined her and Tye Sheridan at the New York based event. Full of praise for him, she told IMDB, “It is like he was born to be a director. He thrives at it. He knows the X-Men world inside and out so I think it was such a natural thing for him to do, to be the director of this movie.”
And her co-star Tye Sheridan echoed her thoughts stating, “I know Simon has never directed before, and now he’s directed this huge movie and I don’t think there was ever a question from me or any of the cast, or any concerns about him taking this on. He’s just a natural with characters and story, and constructing a narrative.”
The stars also acknowledged some rumours about the movie revealing that it picks up after the, “X-Men: Apocalypse,” chapter, which was released back in 2016. Kinberg also teased that the movie is going to be the most emotional of all the X-Men films as it focuses a lot on its female characters.
“Game of Thrones,” actress Sophie Turner touched on this also when she stopped by Shop Studios during New York Comic Con on Saturday.
“This is the thing with the X-Men movies,” she started, “They deal with genuine problems. They’re all alienated from society. They deal with segregation and racism. It’s really exciting that they deal with women empowerment too and this movie goes even further by dealing with mental health. Some of my family has a history with mental health and this movie deals with it in a non-gimmicky way that’s awesome to put on the screen.”
She also talked about the relationship between her and Tye Sheridan’s characters, which will be the biggest difference between Dark Phoenix and the previous X-Men films. “At the center of this movie is the relationship between Scott Summers and Jean Grey. Scott is the one who stands by her when she is falling part. It’s an amazing storyline for Scott as he is finally able to step up as a leader in the X-Men.”
