Just before Christmas, Angelina Jolie announced that she was ending her 22-year partnership with the United Nations High Commission on Refugees. Jolie had gone from a UNHCR goodwill ambassador all the way up to a special envoy. It was said that Jolie’s focus from here will be on smaller NGOs doing work on the ground in and around refugee crises. She’s also planning to focus more on protecting children from abuse domestically and internationally. I believe that we’re about to see a new era of Jolie’s activism and I’m very interested to see where she goes and which organizations she highlights or partners with. But she still has some other remnants of her old life to clear up – she also just closed down the London-based foundation she started in 2015. From the Mail’s Eden Confidential column:
Angelina Jolie worked so closely with the two political advisers she met through her United Nations work with former Conservative leader William Hague that they set up a charity together to tackle issues such as violence against women.
I can disclose that The Jolie Dalton Helic Foundation was, however, formally closed down today.
The Hollywood star had made a huge financial investment in the charity, which she co-founded with Baroness (Arminka) Helic and Chloe Dalton.
Jolie has put in £1.7 million since it was founded in 2015, according to records. But it now has reserves of just £52,947 and owes £1,524 to creditors.
“It now has reserves of just £52,947 and owes £1,524 to creditors…” I would assume that the bulk of the money Jolie put in (and others put in) has been donated and put to use over the past seven years. It sounds like Jolie, Dalton and Helic were winding down operations for a while and the foundation simply wasn’t their priority anymore. That “debt” is probably just the outstanding bills on whatever space they were using for the foundation. Anyway, I wonder if there’s anything more to this story – like a falling out between the women – or if it’s just a simple matter of shifting priorities and wanting to use certain resources in different ways.
