Following the release of their new single ‘Stars’ last week, five-piece group PRETTYMUCH have unveiled their highly anticipated EP Smackables.
Released via Sire Records and completed in their home studios during the pandemic, the three-track EP also includes new tracks ‘Parking Spot’ and Free’, showcasing PRETTYMUCH at their strongest yet. With the band playing a hand in the writing and production of the songs, the five-piece are at their most authentic whilst carving their own lane.
Smackables is a genre-bending EP which opens with the dreamy ‘Stars’. Offering a hypnotic RnB vibe, the track is laced with an irresistibly infectious melody and highlights a real growth in their sound. Unveiled as a taster of the EP, ‘Stars’ perfectly emphasises that PRETTYMUCH are a band not to be played with. After years of hard graft, it’s clear to see that Brandon, Austin, Nick, Zion and Edwin mean business during this new era.
‘Parking Spot’, which takes inspiration from a rap battle the group was watching one day, hones in on the heartbreak of a girl giving up on a relationship. “Since when did you have other plans to leave me here in the sand with a broken heart?” the band sing over a trap-infused melody. The slick release also comes accompanied by a trippy fairground visual, with PRETTYMUCH trying to track down a mystery lady.
The EP is completed by the gorgeous ‘Free’, a raw and honest mid-tempo ballad about letting go. Boasting emotional maturity, this track wraps up Smackables nicely and further showcases flavours of RnB and pop, combined with elements of acoustic guitar and synths.
Along with the band taking control when it comes to songwriting and production on this record, what’s notable is that each member gets a chance to shine when it comes to singing too. This is something which has delighted fans and also emphasises the uniqueness of the members which make PRETTYMUCH ones to watch in the industry.
Smackables is an ambitious offering which marks a new beginning for PRETTYMUCH. Every inch of the EP is true to the band’s artistry and allows them to unapologetically be themselves. With more new music on the horizon, 2021 looks set to be the year that this five-piece truly come into their own and gain the global recognition they deserve.
Smackables is available to download and stream now.
